North Harbour's Preseason Rookie Top 30

North Harbour's Preseason Rookie Rankings as at 8 July 2008

(Disclaimer: According to you, and most people, after the top 10 they might be a little off, you've just got to live with it I'm afraid)

1. Michael Beasley - Miami Heat - He is likely to get a starting place with Wade and one of Marion and Haslem along with him. He should score and rebound a lot making him numer one on my list. He has a lot of doubters, but at this early stage he is my number one.

2. OJ Mayo - Memphis Grizzlies - He is the number two option behind Rudy Gay. With excellent young point guards in Conley, Crittenton and Lowry dishing him the ball he should score lots. I can't see him getting a lot of assists or rebounds. It'll be like Kevin Durant last year, he'll do stuff, but the bulk of it will be putting the ball through the hoop. Except he has Rudy Gay, KD didn't.

3. Derrick Rose - Chicago Bulls - He has Luol Deng and a bunch of other (and I use this term lightly) randoms to pass the ball too. I can't see him scoring a lot but he'll get his fair share of assists.

4. Greg Oden - Portland Trailblazers - His impact might not be shown by statistics as he has Aldridge, Roy, Webster, Outlaw, Blake and Bayless on his team. But he will make a good difference and along with their new rookies Portland should be a lower seed in the playoffs next year.

5. Eric Gordon - Los Angleles Clippers - Imagine Baron, Kaman, Thornton and Brand along with Gordon on the same team. If there team name wasn't the Clippers I'd say they could make the NBA finals. Gordon probably won't be scoring a lot but he will play well and have a great career -- he just has that aura around him.

6. Russell Westbrook - Oklahoma City Outlaws - I know they are just scrimmages but did you see how he dominated in the summer league. The pick is looking better and better by the minute. He should score and rack up the assists on the Outlaws, statiscally speaking he may be in the top two of rookies, but I don't feel that he wil have the x-factor or impact etc to contend with the players I have in the top 4 to be ROY.

7. Brandon Rush - Indiana Pacers - Wants to be the next Reggie Miller. He might just be, you never know.

8. Kevin Love - Minnesota Timberwolves - If he is starter Al Jefferson should dominate, he will get his though.

9. Jerryd Bayless - Portland Trailblazers - I can see him being the starter come seasons end. He fits in perfectly as Roy will have the ball more. He may be higher than 9th best rookie but that's where I have him.

10. Rudy  Fernandez - Portland Trailblazers - Dominated his European league, similar to Luis Scola and Juan Carlos Navarro, will be backup to Brandon Roy.

11. Brook Lopez - New Jersey Nets - Likely backup center to whoever, should see minutes. Won't be amazing.

12. Darrell Arthur - Memphis Grizzlies - Just cos I like him.

13. Danilo Gallinari - New York Knicks - Horrible pick, followed up with a fairly weak signing in Duhon. Meh.

14. DeAndre Jordan - Los Angeles Clippers - Many people won't have him so high but I feel he will get the lion's share of the backup minutes at PF and C when Kaman or Brand are out. If he proves himself early he may just find his NBA feet and become a star.

15. Anthony Randolph - Golden State Warriors - Likely backup to Stephen Jackson. Good chance of being a bust due to not being given the minutes to develop.

16. Ryan Anderson - New Jersey Nets - Likely backup to PF. Should see a lot of minutes in the rrebuilding team.

17. Robin Lopez - Phoenix Suns - Third big man after Amare and Shaq, the next backup will be one of Brian Skinner or Sean Marks...Should see a lot of minutes, a good chance to develop and two great mentors in Shaq and Amare. Could make a bigger impact than most think.

18. Roy Hibbert - Indiana Pacers - Due to lack of depth (Jeff Foster and Co) he should see some minutes. May develop, may not. Should be a solid bench center for years to come in my mind.

19. DJ Augustin - Charlotte Bobcats - Would be higher, but Larry Brown hates rookies. Just imagine how good Darko would've been if Larry Brown actually let him develop rather than keeping him on the bench JJ Redick style.

20. George Hill - San Antonio Spurs - Would be lower but according to a report he will be the backup PG to Tony Parker and that is a great mentor, along with Gregg Poppovich and the general atmosphere of the Spurs he should be a nice bench player for years to come.

21. Joe Alexander - Milwaukee Bucks - Backup to Richard Jefferson. Won't be a bust, won't be a superstar, may not be a future starter either. Right pick for them but not at 8, could've traded down -- but that's too much work.

22. Jason Thompson - Sacramento Kings - Picked way too high and will be PF backup. Will get some minutes. Shouldn't be a bust.

23. Chris Douglas-Roberts - New Jersey Nets - The Nets still want Vince Carter to be their centerpiece this year, meaning he should get 35-40 mpg. CDR should see the remainder of minutes at SG. Better than a 2nd round pick, if only he had allowed himself to be worked-out by the teams with picks in the lower 20s.

24. Mario Chalmers - Miami Heat - The Heat have Quinn and Chalmers and Banks. I don't know why they are going after another PG but he would be higher but it looks like he won't see as many minutes as he should behind Quinn and whoever they pickup. He will be good if he develops probably.

25. Kosta Koufos - Utah Jazz - Backup center. Should get some minutes. I think he will be good.

26. Marresse Speights - Philadelphia 76ers - Should be a decent backup PF.

27. JaVale McGee - Washington Wizards - Too many big men in the capital to develop probably. Likely to be a massive bust in my mind...He is this high because if he gets his chance he will take it and run with it.

28. JJ Hickson - Cleveland Cavaliers - Smith, Wallace, Varejao and Illgauskas are the C and PF in Cleveland. Not sure how many minutes he will get. Should be given the chance because he is young -- Those four are not.

298. Donte Green - Houston Rockets - Adelman will probably give him a shot, similiar to the shot Landry got. He will be good if he is patient.

30. DJ White - Oklahoma City Outlaws - He should get minutes on this young team. Won't stun anyone with his skills but won't be a bust.

I challenge you to make a slightly better one!!!

It'd be a shame to let this go to waste...

I wrote this in a thread on the world sports board, so I'll let some of you have the honour of reaading it too!!!

I Introduce to you my rugby comments...

Argentina needs extra competition but in the Tri-Nations they would have a brutal travel schedule and would struggle to win a game for their first couple of years, by which time everyone will be disputing it...

Putting them into the Six Nations would make sense as their national squad players all play in european leagues, they could host their games in Europe. Seeing as the games in the Northern Hemisphere are won 5 kicks to 3 kicks Argentina would fit in well with their soccer-styled game.

Plus they defintely can beat France, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Italy at their home grounds. They just cannot beat the All Blacks (on a non-world cup year, just remember that is when we win) in New Zealand and winning in the republic is hard enough for the All Blacks and the Wallabies let alone Argentina.

I thought it was a bit raw that South Africa managed to claim the title of worlds best through beating England twice, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and Argentina....Though I do think they deserve it, it was a cheap having such an easy route there...I wouldve prefered to see the Springboks go through beating top teams (NZ, Aus, France) to get there.
I am from Auckland in New Zealand and have lived here all my short life so far so I am Blues fan, so I am used to my teams choking (which is lucky or I might have suffered a stroke watching yet another All Blacks team choke come World Cup Time) and losing to the Waratahs last week was gutting...

The Sharks are still undefeated...What a schedule they got this season, come semi final time if they get a home semi they will be dangerous, look for the Crusaders to win the Crusaders cup (err...Super 14) back this season...

Congrats to Wales for winning with what shouldve been the 2nd in charge of the All Blacks this season (Warren Gatland).

I hope to wont have to say Congrats Australia (not that I would anyway) for winning the tri nations with what should have been the All Blacks head coach (Robbie Deans).

Speaking of coaching look for South Africa to suck this year in the Tri-Nations because they selected the best BLACK available coach, not the best available coach. Their squad will include the best BLACK players as well apparantly...

Dont know too much about the northern hemisphere club competition but I support Toulon in France and Sale in England. Go Luke McAlister...Born and Bred North Harbour boy. Interesting to see how North Harbour will cope without Luke McAlister at No. 10. Fly Half was a weakness for North Harbour last season. We need a solid one...We signed one who had been playing in Ireland or something but Ive never seen him play. Hopefully he can kick. We lacked it last season. Anyone else followed the Air New Zealand Cup???
How can the Cheetahs not convert Currie Cup success in South Africa to Super 14 success, even against other South African teams?? It baffles me to this date.

You should read this, it's about the NBA...

Usually no one will read beyond the title...but if you made it this far....GOOD JOB!!!

1.
It is official, I am the NBA Boards rookie of the year....(Yeah, That's right Lakers2408...JOKES) Congrats to Axesstar and Lakers2408 (who got my vote) who were both one vote behind me...I promise the rest are actually NBA related, just keep reading.

2.
Does Atlanta have a grudge against TJ Ford?? Not only did they not allow Fords layup because the clock obviously started early on Wednesday but last season he didn't have a layup counted late in a loss to the Hawks. And that ultimately played a part in the league upholding the Heat’s protest of that Dec. 19 game. Lucky for TJ it is unlikely that theyll play Atlanta in the playoffs at any time...

3.
The Orlando Magic had a fund raising gala last weekend, The winner of the annual community service award was given to superman himself, Dwight Howard. Strangely enough the day before he received the award he was slapped with a paternity suit in Orange County. Is that odd, or is it just me?

4.
Back to the Raptors controversial loss to the Hawks on Wednesday...The Raptors were up by three with four seconds to go in regulation time, the Hawks had the inbounds pass and despite what coach Sam Mitchell wanted the Raptors didn’t foul Mike Bibby when he got the ball on an inbounds pass, allowing him to make the game-tying three-pointer. I mean what a mental breakdown...imagine if that happens in the Playoffs -- as well as Chris Bosh (I did a thread about this a week ago) lashing out at his team for being too hesistant...Raptors better be prepared come playoff time.

5.
76ers guard Willie Green was in the midst of his worst shooting stretch this season coming into Tuesdays game. Before that game he had made just 13 of his last 64 shots, including 1-of-19 on 3-point attempts. Is that pathetic or what?? I mean, I go better than 1-19 from 3-point range.

6.
Back to other East teams who might have what it takes to fail in the playoffs, the Wizards have Gilbert Arenas back. They are obviously good without Gilbert Arenas, and they are obviously just as good with him. But I don't think Caron and Antawn have enough time to adjust to secondary roles as Gilbert obviously is not going to take a back seat. I just question whether Arenas wants to be a star or whether he has the fortitude to lead the Wizards deep into the playoffs. (Anyone guess the keyword in that paragraph?? It was "Obviously")

7. The Suns have racked up 26 Technical Fouls over the 23 games that Shaq has been with them...Including 4 technicals in Tuesdays loss to the Nuggets. The Suns also have 11 technicals in their last three games...And you thought Kobe was bad...

8.
I just (yes, I am that slow, J/K) noticed a "preview" button at the bottom...does anyone actually preview their blog first??? Especially when there is an edit button anyway???

And if you made it this far...you may as well add a comment...huh...

The Shaqtus and his massive mouth

Is anyone else tired of Pat Riley and the Shaqtus going at eachother???

It's gone from being funny to being disrespectful and now it is dragging on and on. It has so far that Pat Riley and Steve Kerr are having meetings about it..

I don't see why he had to make such insulting comments to players who, yes they aren't as talented as he is, were at least out there trying to play basketball instead of nursing injuries that magically healed upon being traded to a playoff team.

This does seem to happen everytime he leaves a team, imagine what he is going to say about the league when he retires in a couple of years?

Imagine if more players pulled a Shaq, it would be crazy... I just can't see Dirk Nowitzki coming back from injury and going, "You guys are useless, why did we trade for Jason again? He just drags us down. When I'm gone we aren't even top 8. Im the greatest and everyone else sucks."

But that is what Shaq seems to say and do more and more often these days and Im persomally tired of it already...

Shaquille O'neal is just running out of ideas to keep the spotlight on him. Shaqtus just needs to shut the hell up and get on with dragging down a teams fast paced offence.

Pat Riley you can just get on with not doing your job (you are HEAD COACH of an NBA team, remember) ....not an NBA scout for the NCAA....

Steve Kerr thought Shaqtus's comments were 'embarrassing'. Steve - No one cares what you think!!!

Shaqtus, just shut up before everybody loses their respect for you...

It's a song about me...

My name is Morgan, I am from New Zealand and I am the legendary ( j/k ) North Harbour...and Im up for rook of the year...yeah go me haha..

I first followed along with the NBA when I was ten...but really started watching it when I was 13. My favourite team is the Orlando Magic and Id have to say Hedo Turkoglu is the man but he cant beat out Superman (Jr? / II / The 2nd) himself -- Dwight Howard.
The Orlando Magic message board stinks though...and there are hardly any posts on it so I do the bulk of my posting on the NBA Board.

I post on the NFL board every now and then as I really got into it this season and have sorta followed it since the Steelers won. Thus making them my favourite team. Last season I found myself wanting the Browns to win except against the Steelers so Im never going to be called a hardout NFL fan....

There is only one NBA Player from New Zealand -- Sean Marks, Phoenix Suns. Candidate on Viktor Crapper 12th man of the year...he is in charge of choosing the fabric softener for each stars uniforms and I hear that when they win by more than 30 he even gets to choose where they go to eat afterwards!!! New Zealand represent...hahaha

That brings me to my favourite NCCA Basketball Team...the Washington State Cougars...they are the current university of Thomas Abercrombie who is also from the North Harbour region in New Zealand. Hopefully they can do the impossible and beat the Tar Heels in the sweet 16...

Apart from American sports I follow Rugby regiously as I have wrote somehwere before.....Soccer, Tennis, Netball...I know a bit bout them

Well it wasn't exactly a song but if you managed to read your way through that I always appreciate comments and that is about me!!!

Oh yeah, time for my shameless self-promotion....Vote for North Harbour - Rook of the Year in NBA Boards awards...(though all the other nominees in the catergory are in my favourite posters I think...ha)

Laters...
